Old Cat is Old

Took all 3 cats to the vet last week.

Lucy’s lost 2 lbs in 2 years.  She’s getting tinier & tinier.  Her teeth are bad/painful/need cleaned.  The vet wants to put her under & clean them, then pull a couple while they’re in there.

Poor old girl.  They did bloodwork on her to see if she’d be ok to have the
dental work.  She’s in good shape except for kidney function.  She’s at 25%.

So, kitty dental work is scheduled for next month.

This Friday, the vet is going to show me how to give her subcutaneous fluids at home to help keep her from getting dehydrated since her kidneys aren’t
awesome anymore.

I know I shouldn’t be surprised (she’s almost 17.)  But it makes me sad anyway.

So, I'm doing the Polar Bear Jump again...

I was walking in to work from my car this morning & thinking about how cold & miserable I was with the wind whipping around between the buildings downtown.  Then, I thought about how cold I was the last time I did the Polar Bear Jump & decided I'm going to do it again anyway.

A friend promised to sponsor me pretty much on the spot, so no backing out now.

I'm going to shoot to raise $200 again.  The money will be donated to the
Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank just before the jump.

I'd like a jumping buddy.  Someone to hold my hand & scream & jump in with me.  Just putting that out there.

Moral support, pledges, gawkers, onlookers, & people waiting to wrap me in dry blankets are also welcome.

Writer's Block: You're my best friend

Who was your best childhood friend, and where are they now?

Catherine:  She's in Cleveland.  She's a teacher.  We had a couple phone conversations a couple summers back.  I guess we don't have time for each other.  It would be nice to catch up.

Carrie: She was a great friend from about age 8 to 10, then she moved away to El Paso, TX.  I remember being allowed 1 long-distance phone call to talk to her after she moved, but I've lost track of her.

Lisa:  She died very suddenly a few years ago when we were both 31.  I was 2 days older than she was.  The odd thing is that I'd just run into her mother at the store a couple of weeks prior to that.  I'd given her my phone number & her mom said she'd pass it on.  I had been expecting her to call me any day and then I heard that she'd died.

It's odd how friendships can be so intense then fade away.  If you'd asked me when I was 10, I'd have sworn I'd never lose track of those girls.

Writer's Block: Spreading the cheer

Do you decorate your home for the holidays? If so, when do you put your decorations up and when do you take them down?

Not really.  My sister & her gf hang up lights every year, and I do think they're pretty.  Maybe when I feel like I have a place of my own again, I'll decorate more.  I do kind of like it.

Writer's Block: Open book test

Based on the books on your bookshelf, what conclusions would people draw about you?

That I have an odd obsession with true crime (Serial Killer Picture-Book, FTW!) & BDSM-themed novels...?

They're not related, really...

*Tap* *Tap* *Tap* Does this thing still work?

So, lots of stuff going on...

The garden is coming along well & I'm enjoying talking to some of my fellow gardeners at the community garden.  I met a nice librarian this evening who happily replaced the bush cucumber I lost to the Evil Groundhog with an extra that she had.
I've mulched my plot with newspapers (well, it's about half done) which I'd read about & thought sounded like a good idea.  It's free, but not pretty.  I'm laying it down 5-6 layers thick & weighting it down with rocks.  It seems pretty effective so far.

Evil Groundhog... is Nommming everyone's cucumber plants.  We'll see if he gets around the Chicken Wire Barricade.  I will make him work for his noms.

I signed up for a "100 Days of Fitness" challenge at work.  I am down 17.4 pounds from my post-vacation junk food bloat weight 2 weeks ago.  And... still about 9 pounds higher than my lowest point last summer.  But, I feel better.

In 3 minutes, I can check the website to see how my team did in the first round of the challenge.  I think we did well, if the graphs are any indication.  I am the team captain. :)

I cannot wait till the 13th of July.  I need to see some naked hippies ASAP.

I just checked the 100 Days of Fitness Challenge & my team placed 1st in the "Highest percentage of weight lost per day" category for my office & #2 in the nation.  'Cause we are teh awesome!  (queue cliche Queen soundtrack here)

My Garden

I got my garden started Friday after working 6 hours of OT.  I came home, changed into clothes that would cover most of my pasty whiteness and protect me from the sun.  The exposed bits got lubed up with sunblock (not as scandalous as you may think.)
So, after about 2 hours I managed to plant sunflowers, tomatoes, a mix of sweet peppers, cucumbers, spaghetti squash, loofah squash (they're edible!!! who knew!?)  garlic chives, and zinnias.

My sweetie came by to keep me company for a bit while I was planting.  Nope.  He didn't help.  Nope.  I didn't really want or expect  him to.  He's totally excused since he's been taking care of his lawn & his grampa's lawn & is kinda yard-worked out.
I stopped by today to check on things (the garden is not in my yard.  It's a community garden plot behind a church.)  Everything looks great.  I was afraid my fragile plant babies would have gotten sunburnt over the weekend & frizzled right up.  But, they are hanging in there & my cucumbers are already sprouting.

So, maybe this year I'll have something to give to the neighbor who always gives me veggies!  That would be neat.

Disjointed List of the Stuff that should be paying Rent in my Head

I feel frantic & calm at the same time.  I think that's the Lexapro working.  Oh yeah.  Lexapro.  It's supposed to even me out, right?  Meh.  I think the crazy dreams are gone now, anyway.

I have been procrastinating about some Big Scary Grownup Shit.  I've taken some baby steps.  The next steps are going to be Enormous.

Today I went for the follow-up appointment for the rash under my eye.  It's better.  I'm still going to have to be on medication for it.  *sigh*  I also had them freeze a little baby wart off my toe while I was at the dermatologist's office.  It was so tiny it was almost cute.  Now it's cutely ouchy.

I've been liking my job a lot more lately.  My new supervisor is pretty cool.  Also, I think I'm going to be getting my productivity bonus back very soon.

I have a trip to Texas planned for June 8th-15th.  Hopefully I can relax.  Maybe I'll read a book or 5 while I'm gone.

Today, I stopped by my community garden plot on my way home.  It's been tilled but not much else.  Other gardeners have started planting, but no one's really gotten a lot done yet.  I'm planning to stop by tomorrow if it's dry & maybe rough up the dirt a bit/shake out some weeds.  It's convenient that it's on my way home from work.

I'm too passive...

Or maybe just too sleepy.

I had a doctor's appointment this morning at 10am.  They were running behind & accidentally skipped over me.  I sat (&napped) in the exam room until 11:30.

It was actually a dermatologist's appointment (for a rash I've had under my under my eye the past 3 months or so.)  I can't believe how busy dermatologist's offices seem to be.  The long story short:

I probably don't have exczema. (That's what primary care physician #1 told me I had.)
I probably don't have a bacterial &/or fungal infection.  (That's what primary care physician #2 told me I had.)
The dermatologist thinks I have perioral dermatitis.  Apparently this can also occur near the eyes.  It's aggravated by stress.  I have 2 new prescription drugs, complex instructions, & samples of Cetaphil to wash with.
I've been informed that my work schedule needs to change.  The past year and a half, I've worked 4 10 hour shifts per week with a flexible start time of 7-9am.  No matter when I came in during that 2 hour window, I was ok, as long as I stayed & worked my full 10 hours that day.  Now I'm being told I have to choose.  10 hour shifts or flexible start times, but not both.  Dammit.
I am going to a funeral tomorrow.  The fiance of a friend from work was shot & killed in Akron last week, on my birthday, actually.  It's been such a long time since I've been to a funeral for anyone so young.

Anyone need a kitty? (I'm all stocked up, myself)

A friend of mine is a realtor who's found a cat abandoned in a vacant house. He is about 13 yrs old & his name is Booty (according to the neighbor.) Booty has no front claws.

My friend's been feeding him, but would like to find him a real home. Please let me know if you might be interested.
